Registrations will be based on a first-come-first-served system. During the ealier stages,

- 30,000 .asia applications during Sunrise period and Pioneers
- 300,000 domain applications submitted during Landrush
- 45,000 domains will go to auction

.Asia is expected to be popular in the Pacific Asia area as the use of social networks such as blog spaces (technorati.cn), video-sharing sites (youku.com), is growing fastly in the region and as businesses are taking advantage of the flourishing e-commerce sector.

According to CNNIC report, the number of blog writers reaches 47 million at the end of 2007. Recently, .cn has surpassed 10 million domains. Thus .com is facing a giant rival in this area. A research firm also announced that China has overtaken the United States as the world’s largest web population, with now 220,000 million internet users (source: Zdnet). The future of Asian domain names seems to be optimistic!

In China, registration of keywords in Chinese ideograms and Latin characters is a new rising business tendency since a few months (see our article). The purpose of these keywords is to make the navigation on the web easier for Chinese users by matching a keyword with an URL.

The keywords containing ideograms can be costly compared to the gain of visibility. In fact, it is restricted to the Chinese territory and users whose ISP (internet service providers) are technically qualified to translate internet keywords into URLs.

Though the approach of these registrars appears to be legitimate, some of them do not hesitate to use litigious and aggressive methods to force registration for these internet keywords, but also for IDNs.

B-to-C brands, brand loyalty, geographical reach were also some of the criteria applied to select the domestic companies. China mobile (1st rank) succeeds in boosting its overseas markets, increasing its brand value.

While “a brand is valuable only if it can produce earnings”, some well-known companies like TsingTao Brewery fall into a price wars, generating consequently a weak profit. Leisure brands like NetEase(11th rank), the Chinese leader in online games, reflects the growing attractiveness of entertainment industry.Heavy research and development investment is a way taken by Huawei Technologies, a Chinese leading provider in next generation telecommunication networks. Innovation can make in fact the companies adapt to competitive environment, reach developed markets such as the United States and create a long term-value.
